Synopsis: An intriguing combination of fantasy thriller and moral allegory, Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde depicts the gripping struggle of two opposing personalities -one essentially good, the other evil- for the soul of one man. Its tingling suspense and intelligent and sensitive portrayal of man’s dual nature reveal Stevenson as a writer of great skill and originality, whose power to terrify and move us remains, over and century later, undiminished.
My Review: It’s difficult read this book knowing nothing about it or about its protagonists. So, in this review I will write only about the things that everybody know before read this book. However, if you’ve never heard about the book or its protagonists, it’s possible you can find spoiler in the review but I will try don’t reveal anything important of the book.
One night, the author of this book dreamed of a person (later named as Dr. Jekyll) who had to go into a closet and use a drug to transform himself into another person. This dream added to the interest of the author on the dual nature of the people. Gave us this book that has inspired many film artists, musicians, writers…
The narrator of this story is one of the friends of the Dr. Jekyll, who also works as a lawyer for him. The friend named Utterson, discovers a strange relationship between the honourable Dr. Jekyll and a person named Mr. Hyde of who only knows that recently attacked to a girl while she was looking for a Doctor. The search of this despicable man leads him to his friend, Dr. Jekyll who shortly before signed a testament which specified that in case of death or disappearance, Mr Hyde would be the sole heir of his fortune. Utterson, worried about this, tries to talk to Dr. Jekyll to convince him to change his testament.
The whole book except the last two or three chapters, focuses on the search of Utterson for know more about the mysterious Mr. Hyde and try to convince his friend that he shouldn’t associate with this kind of people who only can damage his reputation. It’s a book full of mystery and intrigue with a surprise ending for those who never heard anything about the book.
The brevity of this book and the literary style of the author, give us an entertaining story, descriptions aren’t very abundant but the illustrations contained in the book help us a lot. I really enjoyed reading this book, the only bad thing I can remark about it’s its brevity. My valuation for this book is 5/5.
